The latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings are in, and Georgia football once again is on the move. This time however, instead of moving down like last week, Kirby Smart’s squad has moved up to No. 10.
Everyone knew Georgia would move up after beating Tennessee, but no one knew how much. Would Georgia move past Ole Miss and even Alabama even though they lost to both teams?
Many thought Georgia would pass Ole Miss at least, but UGA did not pass either the Rebels or the Tide. Ole Miss came in one spot ahead of Georgia at No. 9 and Alabama came in at No. 7. So it's clear that the committee is valuing the head-to-head result the most because Georgia's overall resume is clearly better than both.
That is unfortunate for Georgia because it will be impossible for UGA to pass either team unless they lose a game.
Georgia's 2024 CFP Rankings History
Georgia started off very strong in the first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings two weeks ago when they were named the No. 3 team in the country. However, after losing to Ole Miss, the Bulldogs shockingly fell all the way to No. 12. This meant Georgia was the first team left out of the 12-team CFP field.
Now that Georgia has knocked off Tennessee at home by 14 points, they climbed up two spots to No. 10 and are comfortably inside the 12-team CFP field.
What does Georgia need to do to make the CFP?
At this point it is very clear what Georgia needs to do to make the College Football Playoff. Now that they are inside the 12-team field, the Bulldogs just need to win their final two games against UMass and Georgia Tech and they should have nothing to worry about.
Another goal for Georgia is to earn a seed between 5-8. Doing this means Georgia would host their first round playoff game at Sanford Stadium instead of having to play their first playoff game on the road. There also is still a chance Georgia could win the SEC and earn a top four seed in the CFP, but that scenario seems unlikely at this point.
