Georgia football is coming off a blowout loss to Ole Miss on Saturday, so it isn't a surprise to anyone seeing them fall in the rankings. The Bulldogs already dropped to No. 11 in the updated AP Poll rankings, but now that the College Football Playoff rankings are being released every Tuesday the AP Poll doesn't matter all that much anymore.
So now that Kirby Smart and Georgia have their second loss of the season, they are in jeopardy of missing the CFP altogether. So where does the committee have Georgia ranked with three regular season games remaining?
Georgia falls 9 spots in updated CFP rankings
Georgia has fallen nine spots all the way down to No. 12 in the updated CFP rankings. Because of the CFP's rules where the top five conference champions automatically make the 12-team field, Georgia is actually the first team left outside of the playoffs.
Most Georgia fans likely knew the Bulldogs would fall a lot in the rankings, but to fall all the way to No. 12 is very surprising. Ole Miss is clearly a very good team, so to drop nine spots after losing to them on the road makes no sense.
This sets up an extremely important matchup with No. 7 Tennessee this weekend in Athens as the featured game in all of college football, a game College GameDay will be in town for.
What do these rankings tell us about Georgia's chances to make the playoffs?
Georgia falling all the way to No. 12 means that they need to win out just to make the playoffs. Another loss, even if it was to a good team like Tennessee this weekend, would likely be too much to overcome.
But with two easier games to finish their regular season, if the Bulldogs survive this weekend they likely will make the 12-team field at the end of the season.
