First quarter vs Tennessee shows Georgia DC Glenn Schumann is not head coach material

Kirby Smart needs to stop putting his full trust and faith into so-so coaches like Glenn Schumann.

It was not all bad for the Georgia Bulldogs in the first half of their road game at the Tennessee Volunteers. However, it has become so painfully obvious that defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is never going to become the next Dan Lanning or anything like that. Everybody and their brother knew the Tennessee offense was going to come out guns a-blazing, yet his defense could not stop it.

While the Georgia offense played better than expected in the first half, Volunteers quarterback Joey Aguilar was throwing one dart after another at will on Schumann's defense. Kirby Smart may need to take on a bigger role to help bail out Schumann again in the second half. This all is just so painfully frustrating because Schumann has been with the team for a decade now, but he cannot be trusted.

Georgia will have its work cut out for it in the second half, partially because of Schumann's defense.

Georgia Bulldogs fans are realizing that Glenn Schumann is just not it

The fine folks on X spoke their mind early and often in the first half regarding Schumann's defense.

There is simply no juice with the guy and his players can sometimes reflect that with their efforts. When it was Lanning calling the shots, Georgia would not let anyone score on them. The iconic 2021 Georgia defense took it personally when the other team put up points on them. This was critical because they were working in a new-ish starting quarterback that season in one Stetson Bennett IV.

Again, Gunner Stockton and the offense have looked the part early, but what about the defense?

Glenn Schumann is going to cost Georgia Bulldogs some games this year

It may happen today, or further down the line, but this Georgia defense has been downgraded just a bit through the first half of this game. While Schumann is not the Dawgs' lone scapegoat, as offensive line coach Stacy Searels needs to have his position group playing better as well, he is the defensive coordinator and has been with the team since Smart first arrived in Athens a decade ago. Be better!

Truth be told, Georgia is still one of the most talented teams in the country, regardless of what happens in the second half vs. Tennessee up in Knoxville. The Vols were a top-20 team coming into the contest, too. They are playing with a lot of confidence, and it is so hard to win on the road in this league. However, the standard for Georgia is making the playoff and competing for championships.

In the end, Smart has to come to grips with the fact that his assistants are starting to let him down more often than not. Coaching attrition is the quickest way dynastic runs in football come to an end. Smart is already a legend at his alma mater, but he cannot let this window of playing championship-caliber football go away because he wants his buddies and his proteges to succeed. This is his job!

For now, Georgia needs to play well together in all three phases to keep the Tennessee streak alive.
