Florida fans crying over 'controversial' call are conveniently ignoring one big truth

Gator fans are still mad over a call that ultimately was correct in the end, but they are missing one key thing about the play.

The Georgia Bulldogs have won yet another meeting of the Cocktail Party over the Florida Gators in a close 24-20 victory. The Bulldogs certainly had their fans sweating it out until about seven minutes left in the fourth quarter when the offense finally hit the big play it needed to take the lead.

Tailback Chauncey Bownes hit the gap the offensive line created for him and ran the ball 36 yards for the touchdown that put Georgia up 24-20. The defense, which certainly has not been the type of Bulldog defense fans have been accustomed to for years, nearly let the game slip through their hands when they left Florida wide receiver J. Michael Studivant wide open on a DJ Lagway scramble play.

Lagway was able to elude pressure, and when he rolled to his left, he threw the ball down the field to Sturdivant, who ended up having to come back to the ball because it was underthrown. Strudivant lost his footing coming back to the pass and tried to make the catch, but the officials ruled it incomplete on the field, stating it hit the ground. A lengthy review confirmed the call, and Florida fans went nuts.

Of course, fans took to social media to complain about the call, but something that should be noted is that after the game, interim head coach Billy Gonzales admitted that he didn't think Sturdivant caught the pass.

Even quarterback DJ Lagway took responsibility, saying he should have made a better throw to a wide-open Sturdivant.

Florida fans want to cry about a call that was correct in the end

As they like to do, Florida fans whined about the call endlessly on social media, blaming the refs for the loss.

It is conceivable because the call was the right call.

It was the right call, but something that Florida fans are conveniently deciding not to pay attention to is that it was not really Sturdivant's fault for not catching the ball. Sure, he shouldn't have lost his footing, but he wouldn't have had to worry about that if Lagway had made a good pass.

If Lagway had taken the second, he definitely would have had to set his feet and make a good throw, then the play would have been probably pretty different.

If the pass was where it should have been, there is no doubt that the ball is caught and Sturdivant would have been in the end zone, putting the Bulldog offense back on the field for a hopeful comeback drive.

Lagway got away from the pressure and had enough time to set his feet. Lagway in no Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, he can't make those throws on the run like that and expect to be accurate, as it is shown in that play.

This is the exact explanation that is needed. So if Florida fans want to continue to cry and whine about this call, they can, but Georgia fans are going to know the truth. In the end, it doesn't matter; Georgia got the win, and nothing can change that.
