There are a few plays that stand out that led to Georgia beating Florida on Saturday. One of those plays that everyone should point to is Chauncey Bowens 36 yard game-winning touchdown run.
This moment was very special for Bowens because he used to be committed to Florida in high school. But the Gators turned their back on him so he made sure to make them pay in the best way possible on Saturday.
Kirby Smart was asked about this play during his postgame press conference, but he weirdly wasn’t willing to give Bowens the credit he deserves for that play.
"Yeah, it was great runs. I mean, I'll be honest with you, Nate could probably make those runs, too. I mean, Dwight could make those runs, McCray could make those runs. Let's give credit where credit's due," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "Chauncey did an awesome job. I thought that the check on the run for the touchdown was the second biggest play of the game, because Gunner saw something, changed the O-line, picked it up, and it's really hard to run that, it's hard to defend that play with them stunting the line as they were doing."
Kirby Smart wasn’t impressed with Chauncey Bowens game-winning touchdown
Smart claimed that any one of Georgia’s running backs would have been able to score on Bowens’ game-winning touchdown against Florida, and there is some truth to that. Gunner Stockton audibled to the perfect play and Georgia’s offensive line paved the way for an easy touchdown.
But even if anyone could have scored on that play, Smart should still praise Bowens because of his history with Florida. Unfortunately he did not do that, but Bowens likely doesn’t care. He knows how big his touchdown was and how meaningful it was to him, and at the end of the day that’s all that should matter.
Up next for Georgia is a date with Mississippi State, and it goes without saying that Bowens will need to be at his best for UGA to win. And based on how he played against the Gators, he likely will have yet another dominant performance next week.
Hopefully this time it will be good enough to get a shoutout from Smart though.
