In 2021 Kirby Smart made a big move by hiring longtime SEC head coach Will Muschamp. After a stint with South Carolina Muschamp came on as an assistant under Smart, and Georgia immediately rattled off two National Championships.
Muschamp was even the co-defensive coordinator on the 2022 championship team before continuing in that role for one more year before taking on an off-the-field analyst role.
Muschamp decided this offseason to become the new defensive coordinator at Texas, and this is a decision he himself has said he is very happy with. He not only gets to run a defense again, but he could very well be the reason Texas finally overcomes Georgia and wins the SEC this season.
"The Longhorns have lost to Georgia three times in 2024 and 2025, and Sarkisian went to Kirby Smart's defensive staff in an aggressive move to reshape the Longhorns' defense, ESPN’s Dave Wilson said via ugawire.usatoday.com. “Muschamp's style has drawn raves from players in spring practice, but he hasn't called plays since 2020. Sarkisian's move was made with a national championship in mind. Texas is loaded and Muschamp will be able to turn the Horns loose."
Will Muschamp could go from a Georgia hero to their biggest villain
Georgia owns Texas. The Longhorns have only been in the SEC for two seasons, and Georgia has already rattled off three consecutive wins. None were better than the 2024 SEC Championship game where backup quarterback Gunner Stockton came in for the second half and led Georgia to a comeback victory in Atlanta.
Muschamp was part of all three of these wins. Sure he wasn't Georgia's defensive coordinator for any of these wins, but he played a big role in preparing the team and getting them past a really good Texas team all three times.
Muschamp's tenure at Georgia will always be remembered for the three SEC titles and two national championships he helped win. The five years he was with the program were arguably the greatest five years in program history, so no matter what happens he will always be remembered for that.
But the love he gets from Georgia fans will start to subside if he starts beating them with Texas.
Georgia and Texas do not play this season, but they could meet in the SEC Championship game. In fact, they are the betting favorites to be the two teams to make it to Atlanta which would mark the first time Muschamp goes up against his former employer since leaving Georgia.
Muschamp is a good enough coach to beat Georgia. Being only one year removed from the program though would give him a distinct advantage when he eventually faces Georgia either this year or next year during the regular season.
Georgia fans will still appreciate all of the success he helped bring to Athens during his five years with the program, but he will certainly receive a little less love if he's the reason Texas finally beats Georgia and wins the SEC.
