Will Muschamp was a staple on Georgia's coaching staff for a long time. He was first hired in 2021 before being the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. After that he took a step back into an analyst role, but his impact never decreased as he continued to have a large say in how Georgia's defense was run.
This offseason Muschamp left Georgia and made the move to Texas to become the Longhorns new defensive coordinator. As much as Georgia would've loved to keep him on their staff, seeing him accept a coordinator position at another big school always made sense, but it still wasn't fun to see him leave for an SEC rival.
Muschamp just opened up about his decision to leave Georgia for Texas, and the Bulldogs have no choice but to make him regret what he had to say.
“Very easy decision and a very quick decision,” Muschamp said via on3.com. “Coach Sarkisian reached out and asked me if I was interested in coming back to Texas. I asked my wife Carol, she looked at me and said ‘let’s go tomorrow.’”
Will Muschamp leaving Georgia was the easiest decision he ever made
Muschamp also cited how much he enjoyed his time at Texas earlier in his career from 2008 through 2010.
“Our time with Coach Brown here before was unbelievable,” Muschamp continued. “The University of Texas does everything in a first-class manner. Nothing’s changed. It’s been that way since we’ve been back. It’s been truly awesome.”
Georgia isn't scheduled to play Texas this season, but there is always a chance they could face them in the SEC Championship game or College Football Playoff. Georgia and Texas will battle in 2027 though, and that marks the first scheduled time UGA will face Muschamp since he left for Texas.
That will be an intriguing matchup because of how great both programs are, but Georgia facing their former assistant will be another storyline that will spice this game up.
Facing a former coach can be a bit scary because of how much they know about the program, but Georgia hasn't had any issues beating Texas since they joined the SEC. And until they prove they can beat Georgia there is nothing that anyone in Athens should be that worried about.
