Every Georgia football fan likely remembers the name Broderick Jones. He came to Georgia in 2020 as a five-star offensive tackle and immediately became a big part of the Bulldogs’ offense.

His immediate success was a big reason why Georgia won both of their championships under Kirby Smart, so when he decided to enter the NFL Draft after just three seasons everyone was excited to see what the future would hold for him.

After three years in the league though he has unfortunately hit a few major bumps in the road. None however have been bigger than the recent news out of Pittsburgh as the Steelers decided to decline his fifth-year option before he even gets a chance to play his fourth season with the organization.

Broderick Jones’ injury created uncertainty for his future in the NFL

Jones was selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Steelers. The hope was that he’d be able to be their offensive tackle of the future, and at times it looked like that was going to be the case. But a neck injury that led to surgery derailed his season and ultimately led to the Steelers declining his fifth-year option.

Any team would be concerned after seeing one of their players have neck surgery, but why would the Steelers decline his fifth-year option this soon? Wouldn’t it make more sense to give him a chance this year to see if he’s able to play at the same level before his injury? That seems like the logical thing to do, but the Steelers have decided against that.

Jones will have a chance this season with the Steelers to prove how big of a mistake they made. And if he can do that then he’ll have teams lining up to sign him next offseason when he’s a free agent and have the Steelers wishing they handled this situation completely differently.
