Every day that goes by without Michigan hiring a new head coach is bad news for Georgia. Defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann's name has been thrown around a lot over the last couple weeks, but so far UGA has been able to avoid losing one of their top assistants.
Michigan has missed on their top two candidates already, so the fear is that Schumann could become their top choice soon. But for now it looks like a new name has taken over the pole position and that is former Georgia assistant Todd Monken.
New coach with Georgia ties moves into pole position to be Michigan's next head coach
Monken played a big part in Georgia's success during their run of two National Championships. He was Georgia's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2020-2022, so he played a massive role in turning UGA's offense into the monster that it was.
After the 2022 season Monken made the move back to the NFL to the Baltimore Ravens. He has served as their offensive coordinator since 2023, but there is a chance he could be on his way out as he is currently Michigan's top candidate to be their next head coach.
Monken has only been a head coach one time when he led the Southern Miss program from 2013-2015. His time their started poorly as they only won one game in his first season, but his third and final season ended with a 9-5 overall recored and a trip to the programs first bowl game in three years.
Georgia fans should hope that Monken takes the Michigan job. If he does that means Schumann will likely survive this offseason and be back at Georgia agin next season, and after the great year he has had everyone at UGA should want that. But Michigan's search for a new head coach as been extremely disorganized, so it's impossible to know what is going to happen.
