The College Football Playoff committee released their second rankings of the season on Tuesday, and Georgia unsurprisingly remained at No. 5 in their rankings. The entire top five for that matter stayed the same as the first rankings last week, but the seven spots below Georgia in the playoff field changed drastically.
A few teams dropped out of the playoff picture while some new teams joined the 12-team field, and former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck and Miami were one of the new teams to enter the CFP field on Tuesday.
Carson Beck, Miami are back in the College Football Playoff picture
Beck and Miami were the No. 15 team in the CFP’s updated rankings on Tuesday night. That obviously is outside the top 12 everyone pays attention to when it comes to these rankings, but Miami still found themselves in the 12-team field as the 11-seed.
The CFP bracket still gives automatic bids to the five highest ranked conference champions. Since the ACC as a conference is down this year Miami is actually the highest ranked team in their conference at No. 15, so that is why they were slotted in as the 11-seed in the updated bracket.
Beck and Miami obviously will be happy to be in the playoff field right now, but they might not stay there for long. Miami has two losses in the ACC this season and there are five teams with one loss ahead of them in the ACC standings. So at this point it’s very unlikely for Miami to win the ACC, meaning they won’t end up with the conference’s automatic bid. There is a chance they could get an at-large bid still, but a lot of teams will have to lose in front of them for that to happen.
It will be interesting to see if Beck and Miami end up making the CFP, but for now they are officially in the picture and have a chance to make it in if they win the rest of their games this season.
