Other than a handful of guys like AJ Green and Hines Ward, the University of Georgia has not been a program associated with producing NFL wide receivers. However, Kirby Smart has slowly started to debunk that narrative.
Matter of fact, Georgia has become one of the top ranked schools since 2016 in wide receivers taken in the NFL Draft. Among those is Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens, and after a phenomenal 2025 campaign experts at ESPN predict an even better season in 2026.
Pickens listed as potential league leader by ESPN
Nobody, other than probably a handful of Georgia fans, expected Pickens to do what he did last year. Many expected that once Pickens landed in Dallas that he would just be their No. 2 wide receiver to Ceedee Lamb. Not only did he surpass Lamb in yardage, but he was also a top five receiver in the league with over 1,100 yards.
Going into 2026 people are really eager to see what he can do after having a full year under his sleeve with the Cowboys offensive scheme. His physical characteristics and being able to go up and come down with jump balls make him a perfect target for Dak Prescott in the redzone.
Notably, Pickens led Georgia in receiving touchdowns his freshman and sophomore seasons. The only reason he did not his junior year was due to injury and Brock Bowers being the greatest tight end in college football history.
Whether or not he leads the league in receiving touchdowns, Pickens has truly shown the league what Georgia fans knew he was capable of. With guys like Pickens and Ladd McConkey starting to come out of Athens, it looks as if Smart is starting to slowly change the narrative of wide receivers coming out of the program.
We have already seen Mecole Hardman with a game-winning touchdown in a Super Bowl, and McConkey breaking Los Angeles Chargers playoff game records. The talent is coming in, and it is not slowing down. Georgia is about to have a wide receiver room at the youngest it has been since Smart came to Athens, but also one of the most talented. Six of their wide receivers were four-star recruits or better coming out of high school.
That being said, Pickens is not the last of his level of talent to come out of Georgia. In fact, he could be the first of many to make Georgia into a serious program to develop receivers at.
