Georgia hasn’t had a lot of luck the past few years when it comes to how the College Football Playoff committee treats them. Three years ago they were inexcusable left out of the playoff after a perfect 12-0 regular season, and this year the committee kept them at No. 3 even after Ohio State lost the Big Ten Championship game.
There is very little explanation for how the committee made either of these decisions, and unfortunately they never share many details either. But all Georgia can do is push forward and try to make the committee’s job very easy by winning every game next season.
However, the CFP committee just added a new member that could potentially hurt Georgia’s CFP hopes as the committee added former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn.
Gus Malzahn’s addition to the College Football Playoff committee is bad news for Georgia
Malzahn was the head coach at Auburn from 2013-2020. During his time with the Tigers he managed to beat Georgia just two times, but he was the Offensive Coordinator in 2010 when Auburn won a national title behind Cam Newton.
There isn’t a whole lot of bad blood between Malzahn and Georgia, but he still isn’t someone they want to see on the CFP committee. Everyone can say they go into these meetings without any bias, but as humans that is impossible. So there is a chance that Malzahn could be a little biased against Georgia and hurt their position in the playoff without even realizing it.
Georgia however can make it easy on Malzahn and the committee by winning. If they win every game then there wouldn’t be a decision for them to make, but leaving it up to the committee to make the right choice is the last thing Georgia and Kirby Smart should do.
