Georgia football is entering the postseason as the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff. While that is a great spot to be because it earns them a first round bye, the 3-seed overall has not faired too well throughout the history of the playoff.
The playoff began in 2014, and entering the 12th year of the playoff the 3-seed has only won a national title one time. On top of that, the 3-seed holds a 6-10 overall record during the entire history of the playoff as well.
Georgia will look to change the course of history for the 3-seed in the playoff, but history shows they are the team best equipped to do that.
Georgia is equipped to change the history of the 3-seed in the playoff
The 3-seed did not win a playoff game until the fourth playoff during the 2017 season. That team just so happened to be Georgia who beat Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl before losing to Alabama in the National Championship game.
The 3-seed got back to the National Championship game again in 2019 and 2020, but Clemson and Ohio State both fell short just like Georgia did in 2017. However, in 2021 the 3-seed won their one and only national title, and it just so happened to be Georgia who brought that title back to Athens. The Bulldogs destroyed 2-seed Michigan in the semifinals 34-11 before knocking off Alabama in the Championship game 33-18.
So while the 3-seed has struggled overall in the playoff era, Georgia has actually found a lot of success when given this seed. The Bulldogs overall have a 3-1 record as the 3-seed which equals half of the wins the 3-seed has ever won in the playoff. So if any team is going to improve the overall record of the 3-seed it is Georgia who could take its record to 9-10 with a National Championship run this season.
