Last year it was Zachariah Branch who transferred into Georgia and took over the Bulldogs' wide receiver room. Now it is a former rival turned Bulldog in Isiah Canion who is looking to have a similar impact.
Branch and Canion play the same position, but they do it in a completely different way. Branch looked to beat teams with his speed while Canion will look to do it with his size.
Canion has wrapped up two practices at Georgia so far, but he made it very clear that he looks better than advertised during their practice on Thursday.
“While scanning the wide receiver room, it was easy to see why Georgia was so high on Georgia Tech transfer Isiah Canion,” Jeff Sentell said via dawgnation.com. “The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder looks how a WR1 in the SEC is supposed to look.”
Isiah Canion is as good as advertised early in his Georgia career
Canion came to Georgia after spending a few years with Georgia Tech. That's right, he was once a rival of Georgia and now has become arguably their most important acquisition this offseason.
This offseason Georgia lost six of their top seven pass catchers from a year ago. That amount of turnover is not easy to overcome, but grabbing Canion out of the Transfer Portal was Kirby Smart's attempt to add some experience to a very young, inexperienced wide receiver room. And while it remains to be seen how he pans out on the field, Jeff Sentell with DawgNation said Canion looks the part so far.
It's unlikely that Canion will have the same impact that Branch had last year, but that would be unfair to put on his shoulders. But if he can come in and be a reliable option to Gunner Stockton then he will leave no doubt that he was one of the biggest pickups for the program this offseason.
