Kirby Smart wasn’t too active in the Transfer Portal this offseason, but the players he did grab will more than likely make a big impact this season. That is especially the case with former Georgia Tech wide receiver Isiah Canion.
Canion has already impressed everyone at Georgia all offseason, but starting center Drew Bobo said at SEC Media Days that he believes Canion could be the explosive player that Georgia’s been missing at wide receiver the past few years.
“I definitely think we’re more capable of being explosive,” Bobo said via dawgnation.com. “Isiah Canion has been a great addition for us. I think he’s looking really good.”

Georgia’s offense has been very effective over the past few years. Their run game has been strong and they’ve been able to nickel and dime teams in the passing game to move the ball down the field too.
But one thing that’s been missing is a legit deep threat who can take the top off a defense. Georgia is hoping to finally find that player this year, and Bobo believes Canion could be their guy.
Canion played his first two seasons of college football at Georgia Tech, but it was this past year where he burst onto the scene with 480 receiving yards and four touchdowns. But now that he is in an even better offense it is expected for him to have an even better season this year.
Only time will tell if that actually happens, but Bobo believes he could turn into an explosive threat for Georgia this season.
Isiah Canion could struggle to meet growing expectations at Georgia
Canion has big expectations on him this year, and a lot of that is warranted based on the impact he’s already had throughout the offseason. But it’s important to not let his expectations get too high.
Last year Georgia went out and grabbed a transfer wide receiver from USC. This player had also been in college for two years just like Canion, and that player was Zachariah Branch.
Branch was Georgia’s best reciever by a mile last year as he went on to set the record for the most receptions in a single season in program history. This could lead Georgia fans to expect a similar performance from Canion this season, but that wouldn’t be fair.
No one should be expected to set program records. Branch was one of the top portal players in the country last year and even he wasn’t expected to have as a good of year as he did. Thankfully he did, but Georgia fans need to make sure they enjoy that success without expecting Canion to follow it up.
Canion however will be called on to help fill the void that Branch left now that he is in the NFL. He however can’t do it by himself, but if what Bobo said is true then he should be able to make Georgia’s offense a lot better just like Branch did last year.
