Who will be Georgia football's No. 2 running back this season? Most assumed it would be Illinois transfer Josh McCray, but he is yet to participate in fall camp as he is dealing with an illness. So someone likely will have to step up at the start of the season as McCray acclimates himself to Georgia and gets back in playing shape.
Thankfully it sounds like redshirt freshman Chauncey Bowens is quickly becoming one of UGA's most reliable running backs entering the 2025 season.
Chauncey Bowens is breaking through at the perfect time
Bowens likely isn't a running back Georgia fans are too familiar with as he only ran for 58 yards on 16 carries during his true freshman season in 2024. However, Bowens announced his arrival during Georgia's 2025 spring game as he was one of the players who stood out the most on offense.
Fast forward to this fall and Bowens is continuing to make a name for himself throughout camp. In fact, he is doing more than that according to Jeff Sentell with Dawg Nation.
"Those in attendance for the first fall scrimmage have shared their feedback. The Intel on Bowens was clear and to the point. Trusted reports say the 5-foot-11, 225-pounder now looks the part of an SEC starter, if not maybe a little more than that," Sentell shared via dawgnation.com.
Bowens will not be taking the starting running back spot from Nate Frazier this seson, but he may be cementing himself as the clear No. 2 option behind Frazier. This might even be the case when McCray is full healthy again.
Regardless, Bowens' emergence has come at the perfect time because Georgia needed someone to step up this year alongside Frazier. And by all accounts, it sounds like Georgia will have three legit options out of the backfield in Frazier, Bowens and McCray, once he is healthy again.
