Much of the talk surrounding Georgia all offseason has been if Gunner Stockton can take the next step and lead the Bulldogs to a national title. As the returning starter from an SEC Championship winning team it makes sense that he is dominating these conversations.

But his progress isn’t the most interesting storyline entering G-Day in the quarterback room. That title is reserved for the heated competition between Ryan Puglisi and Ryan Montgomery to be Stockton’s backup.

While many Georgia fans assume Puglisi will have that job just like last year, Montgomery is catching him and could even pass him with a big performance at G-Day.

“His decision-making’s been good,” Kirby Smart said via dawgnation.com. “Ryan’s a very accurate passer. He understands the ins and outs of the offense, the check to where to go with the ball. He’s done a nice job of being accurate and making good decisions.”

Ryan Puglisi and Ryan Montgomery highlight Georgia’s G-Day

Stockton is the most important player in Georgia’s quarterback room. He undoubtedly will be the player fans pay the most attention to during G-Day on Saturday.

But the battle between Puglisi and Montgomery might be more entertaining.

Montgomery was a true freshman last year who was coming off a major injury. That made it impossible for him to catch up to Puglisi on the depth chart, so he was the third option at QB all of last season by a wide margin.

Reports this spring however indicate that Montgomery is catching up to Puglisi. Montgomery has finally learned the enitre offense and is fully recovered from his injury, so now he can flex his muscles and show off his arm talent that brought him to Athens in the first place.

Puglisi still has the upper hand to win the backup job, but Montgomery absolutely has a chance to steal it from him. And he’ll have no better opportunity to do so than on Saturday during Georgia’s annual G-Day.
