Spring practice is coming to an end for Georgia in the next couple weeks. So far one of the biggest talking points has been injuries to Georgia's quarterback room. Gunner Stockton has been dealing with a minor knee injury and that obviously has dominated conversations all spring, but he isn't the only quarterback that's been injured.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Montgomery suffered a brutal knee injury during his senior season of high school. He then came to Georgia last year as a true freshman but could hardly even practice as he recovered. Fast forward to this spring and he is now able to fully practice and show Kirby Smart and his staff what he is made of.
"Ryan's got that knee brace off,” Smart said via 247Sports.com. “He came off a pretty serious knee injury, so his mobility's been better. His decision-making's been good. Ryan's a very accurate passer. He understands the ins and outs of the offense, the check to where to go with the ball. He's done a nice job of being accurate and making good decisions."
Kirby Smart shares encouraging update on backup QB Ryan Montgomery
Montgomery will more than likely be the third string quarterback for Georgia this season. This means that he probably won't take the field for a meaningful snap all season, but that doesn't mean his health and development aren't super important this offseason.
Montogomery could be called on to take over Georgia's offense in the worse case scenerio. Sure that scenario involves Stockton and backup Ryan Puglisi both getting injured, but Montgomery needs to be ready to go in case that happens.
Montgomery howver is building for the future as he his hoping to become Georgia's starting quarterback at some point. Maybe that will happen next year after Stockton leaves or maybe it will happen later than that, either way it is huge for Georgia that he is finally healthy again and able to be a full participant at practice.
