Georgia and Alabama were the biggest game in all of college football last weekend. Well, that's at least what SEC fans thought, but the rest of the country did not agree at first.
ESPN for some reason chose to send College GameDay to Penn State for their top 10 showdown against Oregon instead of coming to Athens for UGA's battle with Alabama. To be fair, Penn State and Oregon were the higher ranked matchup, but at the end of the day they don't compare to Georgia and Alabama. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are the top best programs in the country, so choosing to send GameDay anywhere else was a big mistake.
Georgia, Alabama dominate Week 5 viewership totals
No SEC fan will be surprised to learn that Georgia and Alabama was the most watched game in the country during week five. In fact, their game was the only game all weekend that eclipsed 10 million viewers as they brought in 10.4 million Saturday night.
Most watched CFB games, Week 5:
— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) September 30, 2025
Bama-UGA (ABC): 10.4M
Oregon-PSU (NBC): 8.8M
LSU-Ole Miss (ABC): 6.7M
Ohio St-Wash. (CBS): 5.2M
FSU-Va. (ESPN): 4.4M (Friday)
ND-Arkansas (ABC): 4.3M
USC-Illinois (FOX): 4.1M
Tied with Week 1 for the most 4M+ games.
Oregon and Penn State were the second most watched game on Saturday, but they were still 1.6 million behind Georgia and Alabama.
It is worth mentioning that these two games were played at night during the same time, so it's impossible to argue which game fans cared more about. Georgia and Alabama was the best game of the weekend, and these viewership numbers prove that.
So hopefully ESPN learned their lesson because it was a travesty to not send GameDay to Athens last weekend. And to the Big Ten fans out there that like to act like they are on the SEC's level, this data shows those schools up north have a lot of work to do to catch up to the best conference in the country.
The only bad news is that over 10 million people witnessed Georgia lose their first home game since 2019.
