Georgia basketball earns coveted ranked win, look like an NCAA tournament team
Georgia basketball got off to a fast start this season and we’re sitting at 5-0 heading into this weekend. However, four of those wins came against group of five teams at home while the fifth win came against a below average Georgia Tech team. So the Bulldogs were yet to prove themselves against good competition.
That however changed this weekend when Georgia faced two ranked teams on back-to-back days.
Georgia lost a hard-fought game against No. 15 Marquette on Saturday 80-69. But they didn’t let them hold them back on Sunday as the took down No. 22 St. John’s 66-63.
This weekend was exactly what Georgia needed. They competed against two ranked and proven opponents, and were even able to get a win against one of them. Georgia now sits at 6-1 and has finally showed that they can more than handle their own against legit competition.
So that means there’s one thing Georgia fans and the rest of the country can finally discuss.
The Bulldogs making the NCAA Tournament.
Georgia looks like an NCAA tournament team
Georgia has not made the NCAA tournament since 2015. That is far too long. But so far in the Bulldogs’ young season, they look like they’re on their way to at worst being in contention for an NCAA tournament bid.
The biggest reason why that is the case is because they have done everything an NCAA tournament caliber team is supposed to do so far this season. They convincingly beat the four terrible teams on their schedule and beat a power four team on the road that they were supposed to beat. Then Georgia went and played one ranked team really tough and beat another at a neutral site.
The season may be young still, but a 6-1 record is as good of a start as anyone could have realistically expected. And if the season ended today, Georgia would defnitely be in the NCAA tournament.
But the season doesn't end today, in fact they still have a long ways to go. So to continue to put themselves in position to make the NCAA tournament, Georgia needs to convincingly beat the five reamining group of five teams on their schedule. They also have one more true non-conference test next week when they host Notre Dame, and a win against the Irish would be huge for their resume as well.
After that, UGA would probably just need to go .500 or better in SEC play and they should make the NCAA tournament. So while this start has been nearly perfect for the Bulldogs, they still have work to do. But as of today, all signs point towards Mike White and this Georgia team finally making the NCAA tournament once again.
