Georgia basketball just capped off one of the best weeks in program history. The amazing week began on Tuesday when Mike White and the Bulldogs upset No. 6 Kentucky at home 82-69. However, there was no time to celebrate this win as Georgia had another ranked opponent coming to Athens in No. 17 Oklahoma.
The Sooners were off to an equally great start to their season as well as they sat at 13-2. However, Oklahoma was on a two game losing streak and were winless in SEC play, so they were desperate for a victory. That however did not happen as Georgia pulled away late for a 72-62 win over the Sooners.
Georgia trailed Oklahoma 36-33 at the half, but once the second half began it was all Bulldogs. Georgia's defense stepped up in a big way as they held the Sooners to just 26 second half points en route to this 10-point victory. This dominant performance also included holding Oklahoma's star player Jeremiah Fears to just two points all game.
The Bulldogs were once again led by star freshman Asa Newell who had a team high 15 points. Dakota Leffew also poured in 15 points for Georgia off the bench as well.
Will Georgia finally be ranked in the AP Poll?
Even after Georgia's great start to this season, the Bulldogs have not yet been ranked by the AP Poll. So now the one thing on every Georgia fan's mind is if UGA will finally get the respect they deserve and be included in next week's edition of the AP Poll's top 25 which will come out early in the afternooon on Monday. And in all honesty, it's hard to see how they won't.
Nobody in the country had a better week this week than Georgia. Two ranked wins is extremely impressive even if Oklahoma has been struggling recently, but adding in the top 10 win over Kentucky makes it seem like a requirement to finally rank Georgia. And to put Georgia's argument over the top, they did not just beat these two teams, they won both games by double digits. So anyone with a brain should be able to see that this team deserves to be ranked.
As mentioned, the updated AP Poll will come out on Monday, but if Georgia is included it will be very difficult for them to hold on to that ranking. This coming week, Georgia will travel to Tennessee on Wednesday before hosting Auburn in Athens on Saturday. Tennessee was the No. 1 team in the country before losing their first game of the season this week, so the Vols will likely still be ranked extremely high. Auburn on the other hand was the No. 2 team in the country this week, so they will become the new No. 1 team this coming week.
This clearly will be a very difficult stretch for Georgia, but if they can find a way to win one of these two games then the hype surrounding this team will not be going anywhere.
