Georgia baseball took center stage on Wednesday as their postseason play began in the SEC Tournament. On top of that, there was also a head coach in Athens who signed a contract extension as well.
But let’s first begin with Georgia football, who is reportedly making some progress with a five-star recruit committed to an SEC rival.
5-star Tennessee OT commit has his eye on Georgia
Some of the more exciting recruitments to follow are when Georgia football is attempting to flip a recruit from another team. That excitement increases when the player is committed to an SEC rival as well.
The latest flip target that has surfaced for Georgia is five-star offensive tackle Gabriel Osenda, who has been committed to Tennessee since January. Oscenda is from Tennessee and according to 247Sports is a top 20 player in the country, so he will be difficult to sway from the Vols. But a recent comment from Osenda shows that he is giving Georgia a chance.
“It is only Georgia that could turn my head.”
Time will tell if Georgia is actually able to flip Osenda or not, but there is a lot of reasons to be hopeful at this point.
Georgia’s SEC Tournament run cut short
Georgia baseball began their postseason play on Wednesday in the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed which means they should have no issue winning their first game. That however didn’t happen as the Bulldogs’ tournament run is already over after a 3-2 loss to No. 12 Oklahoma.
While it is unfortunate to see Georgia lose this early in the tournament, it really doesn’t matter all that much. The Bulldogs are a lock to be a top 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and they even have a good chance to earn a top eight seed as well.
So the Bulldogs still have a lot to play for even after this disappointing loss.
Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson signs extension
Speaking of baseball, Georgia did have some good news on Wednesday as head coach Wes Johnson signed a contract extension that will keep him in Athens through 2031. So the rumors of Johnson being intersted in the Mississippi State job turned out to be just that as Johnson is officially here to stay.
Georgia baseball is trending in the right direction this season as they are a consensus top 10 team entering the NCAA Tournament. As mentioned, UGA still has a chance to earn a top eight national seed in the NCAA Tournament, which would give them home field advantage until the College World Series.
The Bulldogs came one game short of reaching the World Series last year, so making it to the promised land this season would be a huge accomplishment. But the goals for Georgia are much greater now, and a National Championship seems more than possible not just this year, but in the years ahead as well.
