Georgia men’s basketball is back after they officially opened their season at home Monday night. There was however some big news in the football program that can’t be ignored as defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is being linked to a major head coach opening.
Glenn Schumann is being named a top candidate for the Florida State head coach opening
On Sunday the Florida State Seminoles fired head football coach Mike Norvell. Fast forward just a few hours and Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is already being named a top candidate to become their next head coach.
Schumann is definitely ready to become a head coach for the first time. He has coached under Kirby Smart for a decade and has been responsible for running their great defenses for many years, so it’s likely just a matter of time until he accepts a job. Florida State hasn’t shared who they’re interested in yet, but Schumann makes a lot of sense.
Not only has he more than proven himself as an assistant, but he has family ties to Florida State and was born less than 100 miles from their campus. Florida State also doesn’t have great finances after firing Novell, so hiring a first time head coach is a cheaper and more realistic option for them.
It remains to be seen who Florida State is actually interested in, and while Georgia doesn’t want Schumann to go that would be a good landing spot for him as a first time head coach.
Georgia is one step closer to not getting a home night game this year
Georgia so far this season has not had a home night game. They only have two more home games this season, so they are running out of chances to play under the lights in Sanford Stadium.
Their best chance left to have a night game at home is when they play Missouri next week. The SEC just released some game times for that week, but they haven’t decided when Georgia will play yet.
Georgia and Missouri will play on ABC either at 3:30 or 7:30 pm EST. ABC is waiting to decide which slot they get based on how this upcoming weekend’s games go, so if both Georgia and Missouri win that will help their chances. The other game ABC has lined up for these time slots is Texas vs LSU, so there’s a real chance Georgia doesn’t get a home night game this season.
Georgia basketball opens season with a win
The Georgia men’s basketball team opened up their 2026-27 season on Monday night against North Carolina Central. They were big favorites in this game and they lived up to those expectations by winning 78-62.
Georgia was led by Kanon Catchings who poured in 16 points and Blue Cain who finished with 15.
Georgia has made the NCAA Tournament the last two years, so the goal again this year is to get back to the Big Dance. The Bulldogs however were bounced out of the first round each year, so the hope is that they can win a tournament game this year.
Georgia has two easy games up next, but next Friday, Nov. 13 they travel to North Carolina for their first real test of the season.
