The head coach carousel is in full swing after Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday. There's a chance that the Seminoles could be the best program looking for a new head coach this offseason, and since they're getting a head start on their search they will have their pick of the litter right now.
While Florida State will likely show interest in a lot of candidates, Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is a name that is already coming up. ESPN already named Schumann as a top candidate for the Seminoles which was followed by CBS Sports saying the same thing. It's too early in the process for Florida State to have said who they're interested in, but Schumann makes a lot of sense for both parties.
Glenn Schumann to Florida State makes a lot of sense
Schumann has family ties to Florida State because his grandfather, Jack Haskin, coached at Florida State in the 1940s and 1950s. He eventually was inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979.
Schumann also born in Valdosta, GA which is less than 100 miles from Florida State's campus as well.
Schumann could also have a lot of interest in Florida State since they are such a big program. They have the resources he would need to compete at the highest level, and with how poorly Florida State has been over the past few years there wouldn't be a lot of pressure on him to win right away.
Florida State could also be attracted to Schumann for a variety of reasons. Not only has he proven to be a great assistant coach under Kirby Smart for the past decade, but he is someone they could easily afford to hire. Florida State's finances aren't great after firing Norvell, so it may be in their best interest to save some money by hiring a first time head coach who they could pay less money to get. This would work out in Schumann's favor because he would then have more money to build a good staff around him and get the best players possible.
Schumann never being a head coach in his career would be a concern for Florida State, but they might not care about that. The Seminoles haven't stated who they're interested in yet, but it would not be surprising to see Schumann linked to this opening over the next few months.
Glenn Schumann has been looked at for head coach openings in the past
This isn't the first time that Schumann has been connected to head coach openings. Two years ago he was one of North Carolina's top candidates before they eventually hired Bill Belichick. Then this past offseason he was linked to the head coach opening at Florida. Schumann ultimately didn't get either of these jobs, but this shows that multiple programs have viewed him as someone who could be a head coach.
Georgia has probably know for the past few years that Schumann will eventually leave to become a head coach elsewhere. While it would be nice to keep him forever one of the greatest signs of a successful program is that your assistants become head coaches elsewhere. Losing Schumann would be tough to overcome, but Georgia has lost assistants in the past and have still remained at the top of the sport.
Schumann is ready to be a head coach, and heading to Florida State makes a lot of sense for both parties. He most likely won't leave Georgia until their season ends, but the rest of this season could realistically be the last games he is Georgia's defensive coordinator.
