Saturday was a big day for the Georgia football program. Emotions were high in Athens as Saturday marked their first fall scrimmage of the year, and Kirby Smart brought the energy and held nothing back as his defense played well but reportedly made some crucial mistakes. Saturday was also Stetson Bennett's first chance to suit up for the LA Rams in a preseason game this year too.

Bennett played well, but Ty Simpson, the quarterback he is competing against for the backup QB job in LA, dominated in his NFL debut.

Ty Simpson shined in Rams' debut which puts Stetson Bennett's future in LA in jeopardy

The LA Rams had their first preseason game of the season on Saturday and Stetson Bennett got the start. Unfortunately for him it was fellow quarterback Ty Simpson who was playing in the first game of his NFL career that played better.

Simpson finished the day completing 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Bennett on the other hand completed four of six passes for 38 yards.

Bennett only played the first two series of the game before he was sidelined for the rest of the day. This was planned by the Rams because they don't want to risk injury as he is their current backup to starter Matthew Stafford. The Rams also wanted Simpson to play more since he is a rookie and needs more reps than Bennett, so that is why their playing time was so different.

Bennett as of now appears to still be the backup, and many NFL analysts believe that will remain the case even after this game. Simpson however showed that he can be a solid quarterback in the NFL, and that is exactly what the Rams were hoping to see after they drafted him in the first round this year.

This is the final year in Bennett's contract with the Rams. They could opt to resign him again next year, but if Simpson continues playing this well they might feel confident in him to choose him over Bennett after this season which would mean Bennett would have to find a new team to play for next year.

Kirby Smart pulicly called out Glenn Schumann during Georgia's first scrimmage

Georgia held their first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday and the defense by all accounts won the day. They however weren't perfect, and Kirby Smart made them know. In fact, he publicly called out defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann during the scrimmage when his defense made some mistakes.

This was an important thing for Smart to do to help ensure the defense doesn't become complacent. So far in fall camp the defense has been much better than the offense, and that could cause the defense to think they're doing their job and don't need to work as hard to keep improving. Smart knows that can't happen.

Calling out Schumann in front of the team will not only motivate him to keep pushing his defense, but it should also get the attention of the entire defense to help them stay focused throughout the rest of camp as well.

5-star Casey Barner schedules new Georgia visit

Casey Barner is the No. 1 safety in the 2028 recruiting class, and he just scheduled a visit to take in a game in Athens this fall.

The specific date of this visit wasn't shared publicly, but he will reportedly be at Georgia for a game this season. This news is significant because it shows Georgia is one of the teams in the running in his recruitment, but that has already been known.

Georgia has recruited Barner since he was in sixth grade. Since that time Barner has visited Athens around 11 times which immediately shows how interested he is in Georgia.

Georgia clearly has a chance to land Barner, but being the No. 1 safety in the country means that many other elite programs will also be aggressively pursuing him as well. The Bulldogs have to feel good about where they stand right now though, and as long as they are still in the running then anything is possible.
