Georgia defense thrives, offense faces similar struggles during first fall scrimmage

Saturday marked the first fall scrimmage for the Georgia football program. Georgia’s defense continued to dominate like they have for most of fall camp, and they also made life extremely difficult for Gunner Stockton and the Georgia offense.

Typically at this point in fall camp the defense is still a little ahead of the offense. It is natural for the offense to take longer to gel with one another, especially with the amount of turnover Georgia’s offense is facing. That is clearly impacting Georgia so far this fall, and their first scrimmage was a great example of how good Georgia’s defense can be this year and how much progress the offense still needs to make.

Georgia defense continues to flex their muscles

The talk of fall camp so far has been the dominance from Georgia’s defense, and that continued on Saturday.

So far in fall camp the Georgia defense has flexed their muscles against the offense. The offense has had their moments, but overall it’s been the defense who has been better. That was to be expected to an extent since the defense returned a lot more talent, especially in their secondary, but it’s nice to see them dominate like most fans were hoping.

If Georgia is going to win a national championship this season it more than likely will be behind a stellar defense. That is what led them in 2021 and 2022, so if they keep trending in the right direction they could be one of the best units in the country.

Gunner Stockton, Georgia wide receivers have work to do

One of the biggest hurdles Gunner Stockton faces this year is getting used to a new group of wide receivers. That has been really difficult against a high level defense like Georgia has, and that remained true on Saturday.

The Bulldogs lost six of the top seven pass catchers from last season. Kirby Smart chose to mainly ride with the young players he had on his roster going into this season instead of hitting the Transfer Portal hard, so these inexperienced players are having to step into large roles for the first time. That will naturally take some adjusting, and that adjustment period is still ongoing.

Georgia’s offense thankfully has had their moments earlier in fall camp. Former five-star receiver Talyn Taylor specifically has been one of the players who has stood out the most, but they’ve shown that the potential is there. They just haven’t been able to put it together for as many practices as they’d like.

The good news is that Georgia’s defense is so good that they likely are one of the biggest reasons why the offense is struggling. Once the regular season begins however they may not face many defenses on their level, so they naturally should play better when the season begins.

Until then they’ll have to continue to work against this stellar defense, but if they start flexing their muscles in fall camp then this offense could be special this year.
