Georgia had their fourth practice of fall camp on Sunday, and Gunner Stockton and the Bulldogs' offense were struggling. That obviously is a huge concern, but on a better note their struggles may have been caused by stellar defensive play.
“Georgia’s secondary got the best of the wide receivers who didn’t make many plays downfield in this practice in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts,” Mark Weiszer said via onlineathens.com. “Quarterback Gunner Stockton didn’t have his best showing. The 6-foot, 185-pound Roldan did have one memorable catch on a deep ball. The sophomore from North Oconee is a player who could help the Bulldogs in their quest to up their explosive plays on offense, but the pass catchers had their share of drops on Sunday.”
One concern surrounding Georgia's offense is coming true
One of the bigger areas of concern about Georgia's offense this season is their wide receiver room. Georgia lost six of their top seven pass catchers from last season, so having to replace that experience with young, unproven players is a reason to be hesitant about how good they can be.
Unfortunately they are off to a slow start this fall which included a lot of dropped passes on Sunday. On top of that, Gunner Stockton has had a slower start to fall camp as well. He had a solid year for Georgia in 2025, but fans believe he needs to take a step forward if Georgia is going to seriously contend for a national championship, and so far during fall camp it's unclear if that has happened.
The good news for Georgia is that the offense's struggles might have more to do with how dominant the defense has been playing.
Georgia's defense may be back and better than ever
Georgia's defense this year is hoping to get back to the dominant play that led them to back-to-back national titles in 2021 and 2022. So far in fall camp they are reportedly playing extremely well, but it's their secondary that has stood out the most.
Mike Bobo and Georgia's offense have received most of the blame from Georgia fans after failing to make a playoff run the last two years. Georgia's defense however might deserve more blame than they've been getting. Just last year Georgia lost to Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff after scoring 34 points which included a defensive touchdown. 34 points should be enough to win any game, but their defense gave up a staggering 39 points.
There are a lot of reasons why Georgia's defense struggled at times last year. An ineffective pass rush hurt the defense, but Georgia's secondary gave up too many plays over the top as well. Their secondary however has been playing well this fall which could indicate that the defense will be more dominant like they were in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Georgia still has three weeks of fall camp to go and the hope is that Stockton and the offense will start playing better. Their struggles however might have more to do with having to practice against an elite defense, and if that's the case then maybe they'll be just fine when the season begins.
