Gunner Stockton responds, Georgia’s offense recovers after early fall camp struggles

Gunner Stockton and Georgia's offense got off to a slow start at fall camp. The Bulldogs are just a week into camp, but most reports have indicated that Georgia's defense has been winning the head-to-head battles between the two units. Stockton and the offense however bounced back during Thursday's practice and reportedly won the day over the defense.

Georgia's defense is loaded this season and have a chance to be one of the best defenses in the country. That will make life very difficult for Stockton and the offense every day in practice, but those challenges will hopefully lead them to be even better as the season progresses.

Thankfully it seems like Georgia's tough defense is already helping the offense improve.

Mike Bobo's new-look play calling has Georgia's offense trending the right direction

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has new plans for Georgia's offense this season. Both he and Kirby Smart have expressed that they want the offense to be more explosive this year, and one of the best ways to do that is by unleashing Stockton's deep ball.

Bobo has talked with the media in great length about how he wants Stockton to push the ball down the field more. He thinks a lot of those opportunities can come organically on broken plays. Last year Stockton would tuck the ball and run most of the time when a play would break down, but Bobo instead wants him to keep his eyes down the field to look for any open receiver.

Bobo can also call more plays that could result in big passes down the field. Last year he focused heavily on screen passes which is where Zachariah Branch thrived, but with Branch gone one way to replace his production is by looking for guys down the field more often.

It's one thing to say this and it's another to actually change how he calls his offense, but so far he has adjusted his play calling during camp and they'e finding some success against Georgia's defense.

Talyn Taylor is emerging as Georgia's new alpha WR

If Bobo wants Stockton throwing more deep balls then he will need a wide receiver he can trust, and it sounds like Talyn Taylor is emerging as the alpha of Georgia's wide receiver room.

Taylor is entering his second season at Georgia after a somewhat disappointing freshman campaign. In 2025 Taylor arrived as a five-star recruit, but he only recorded two catches and 28 yards last year. He unfortunately is most remembered for dropping a perfect pass from Stockton against Alabama in the regular season that would've been an easy touchdown that could've won them that game.

Those struggles are in the past now. Georgia's veteran receivers last year are off to the NFL which means Taylor should have more opportunities this season. So far in camp he is taking advantage of those opportunities, but the thing that matters most is if he produces on the field.

His first chance to prove he is Georgia's alpha will come on Sept. 5 when the Bulldogs open their season at home against Tennessee State.
