Gunner Stockton’s worst nightmare at practice could be one of the best things for him

So far during fall camp Georgia's defense has been dominating the Bulldogs' offense. More specifically, Georgia's secondary has been Gunner Stockton's worst nightmare.

Those attending practice over the last week have continued to sing the praises of Georgia's secondary as they have been arguably the best unit throughout camp.

Georgia's defensive backs are making life really difficult on Stockton and the wide receivers specifically. While this likely is extremely frustrating to Stockton now, this will pay off in the long run as it will better prepare him and his receivers for the season ahead.

Gunner Stockton will benefit from practicing against Georgia's elite secondary

Georgia's secondary could be one of the best secondaries in the country this season. Since Stockton will practice against them every day, that will make him as prepared as possible for every game because in theory the opposing secondary will be worse than what he sees in practice.

It is tough to find a team on Georgia's schedule with a better collection of defensive backs. That will play perfectly into Stockton's and the hands of the entire offense because most of the defenses they play will feel easier than what they go up against in practice.

Georgia will still have to execute against these defenses, but if they can find some success in practice then they should have all the confidence in the world to perform at a high level each game. So far the offense hasn't found enough success yet in practice, but they still have about four weeks to improve against their elite secondary.

Georgia's wide receivers need to answer the call

A big question surrounding Georgia this offseason was the wide receiver room, and they unfortunately have not answered the call yet.

Georgia has a young and inexperienced group of wide receivers after losing six of their top seven pass catchers from last year's team. This inexperience has caused fans and the media alike to question how good Georgia's passing attack can be this season, and even Kirby Smart has wondered the same at times.

So far in fall camp they have not been good enough. Georgia's secondary has been all over their receivers like glue on paper and have given Stockton very little room to throw the ball. Ellis Robinson specifically has stood out the most as he recorded three interceptions on his own during Sunday's practice.

The secondary has been doing so well that Kirby Smart's patience is being tested to the point where he is calling out Gunner Stockton over the speaker during practice to stop forcing the ball in tight windows.

Even if Stockton and his receivers are struggling right now this will pay off in the long run. Once the season begins they may not play against a better secondary than what they are up against right now in practice, so their struggles in practice could eventually set them up to be an explosive unit once the season begins.
