Georgia football had a long two hour practice on Sunday in the Georgia heat, and during that practice the Bulldogs' defense dominated the offense. Gunner Stockton and the offense struggled to move the ball all day, so much so that Kirby Smart called Stockton out after defensive back Ellis Robinson recorded his third interception of the day.
It's unclear if all of those interceptions were thrown by Stockton, but after one in particular Smart yelled at him over the speaker to not "force it."
Georgia's tough defense could be the best thing for Gunner Stockton's development
It may be a bit frustrating to see Gunner Stockton and Georgia's other quarterbacks struggle, but battling a tough defense every day in practice may be the best thing possible for the Bulldogs' entire offense.
Think back to Georgia's national championship teams in 2021 and 2022. Georgia's defenses both years were one of the best units in the entire country, and Stetson Bennett and the rest of the offense had to compete against them every day in practice. That helped prepare them every week as best as possible to the point where playing actual games felt easier because the defense they were up against was worse than what they faced in practice.
That is the reality that Stockton and the offense could face this year. Sure that might mean they struggle more than they'd like to during practice, but that is 100 percent worth it if it makes them better during games.
Ellis Robinson shines on a Georgia defense ready to take a step forward
Ellis Robinson and Georgia's defense need to take a step forward this season. The last few years they've given up too many big plays over the top and failed to get to the quarterback enough, and those woes cost Georgia in the biggest moments of the season like when they gave up 39 points in their playoff loss to Ole Miss.
So far this fall though the defense looks ready to take a step forward. That is especially the case with Robinson, KJ Bolden and the rest of the secondary who have been dominating Georgia's receivers so far during camp. Even starting safety Kyron Jones is rehabbing well and close to being 100 percent back after his foot injury last season.
Robinson came to Georgia as a five-star recruit and the No. 2 player in the country. With that comes lofty expectations to be one of the best players on Georgia's team, and he showed glimpses of that as a sophomore last year.
His stellar camp so far however shows that he may have taken his game to another level this offseason and is ready to torment opposing offenses all year like he's doing to Georgia's offense in camp.
