All offseason a large subsection of Georgia fans have discussed how predictable and sometimes boring Mike Bobo's offense is. A big part of the complaints are due to the lack of explosive plays the past few years, but Bobo is attempting to increase the offense's big plays this season.
It's one thing for Bobo to say that and it's another thing for him to show it. Until Georgia takes the field this season fans won't know for sure if he is making any changes to his play calls, but defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson said that he's noticed a change in Bobo's offense so far throughout fall camp.
“He (Mike Bobo) told me that he was going to be aggressive this year on offense and everything he does,” defensive backs Travaris Robinson said of Mike Bobo’s offense via dawgnation.com. “But Bobo is a really, really, really phenomenal coach, very creative. We’re doing a lot of different things on offense right now, and it’s challenging the defense, and it’s good for the defense.”
Gunner Stockton is Georgia's key to a more explosive offense
There are a lot of ways that Bobo can make Georgia's offense more explosive, but most of them center around Gunner Stockton. Not only is he the quarterback of the team, but he is a player who on his own can improve Georgia's big play ability with a few adjustments.
Bobo talked about this with the media on Wednesday. He said that Stockton needs to be more willing to take shots down the field instead of being scared of making a bad play. Last year Bobo thinks he was too risk averse, so instead of scrambling and keeping his eyes down the field he tucked the ball and ran for a few yards.
Stockton's running ability is one thing that makes him special, so he by no means should stop running the ball. He however needs to keep his eyes down the field when he's scrambling because there are opportunities to pick up 30 or 40 yards on a broken play instead of the five or six he can get with his legs.
Kirby Smart offers new challenge to Mike Bobo that could make being explosive more difficult
While Bobo is focusing on Georgia's offense being more explosive Kirby Smart is focused on improving Georgia's run game. He also wants Georgia to be more explosive as well, but an emphasis on running the ball could make being explosive more challenging.
Just think about all the explosive plays that occur during a football game. More often than not it's a big pass play down the field instead of a huge run. If Smart wants Bobo to run the ball more then it's hard to also expect Georgia to be more explosive at the same time.
Smart however may just want Georgia to do better in obvious run scenarios. Too often Georgia hasn't been able to line it up and pick up two or three yards on the ground to get a first down. Smart knows that in order to win a national championship you have to be able to pick up those key yards on the ground, and that might be what he is referring to.
Either way it is clear that both Smart and Bobo want Georgia to be more explosive this season. It is partially on them as the coaches to make that happen, but at the end of the day it's up to Stockton and every other player to make the plays on the field.
