Mike Bobo believes he knows what will take Gunner Stockton's game to the next level, and in his opinion he wants Stockton to be more willing to take chances down the field.
Bobo believes that Stockton was too hesitant to throw the football down the field last season, so he believes Stockton needs to not be so scared to take a chance on a big play. Bobo specifically wants Stockton to keep his eyes down the field on broken plays because that is where he thinks Georgia can be more explosive this season.
“You can’t be so risk averse that you don’t push the ball downfield,” said Mike Bobo. “Right before I came in here, we were watching NFL plays of guys scrambling and keeping eyes downfield and making big plays… There are chances for explosives on broken plays.”
Mike Bobo is begging Gunner Stockton to not be afraid of making mistakes
Bobo believes Stockton isn't willing to take enough chances down the field because he is afraid of making a big mistake. It ultimately is a good thing for a quarterback to be risk averse, but it is possible to be too conservative.
Stockton made some big throws last season for Georgia. One throw that stands out more than others is when he connected with London Humphreys in the corner of the end zone on a fourth down play late in the game against Tennessee to tie the game. If Stockton didn't take that chance Georgia probably loses that game, but he took the chance, made an elite throw, and Georgia ended up winning in overtime.
One thing that makes Stockton such a great quarterback is how effective he is with his legs. Bobo thinks that can occasionally cost him when scrambling though because he isn't keeping his eyes downfield to see his receivers breaking free.
Stockton's willingness to throw the deep ball is one thing that's been discussed in great length all offseason. Countless media personalities and fans have been begging for him and Bobo to take more deep shots, and it sounds like Bobo is ready to unleash his arm. It ultimately is up to Stockton though to be willing to take those chances.
Gunner Stockton's true potential can carry Georgia to a national champinship
Stockton finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting last year. That shows that he was already one of the best players in the country last season, but his true potential can be even better than that.
Stockton's legs are already elite. There isn't much room for improvement for him as a runner, and his ability to make big plays with his legs is what separates him from other quarterbacks. He however hasn't been consistent enough with his arm, specifically when throwing the ball deep and being willing to take more shots down the field.
Georgia believes in Stockton. They think he is capable of being one of the best passers in the country, and if he combines that with his impressive run game then the sky is the limit.
Stockton not only could seriously contend for the Heisman Trophy if he improved with his arm, but he could finally lead Georgia on a deep playoff run again that could end with a national championship.
