Kirby Smart spoke with the media during Georgia's first practice of fall camp and urged Mike Bobo to make changes to his play calling. The only problem for fans is that Smart wants Bobo to run the ball more and some fans have spent all offseason begging for Bobo to run less and make his play calling more exciting.
Smart however doesn't agree. He believes that Georgia's struggles running the ball last year is a big reason why they didn't make a deep playoff run. He believes that every championship team is effective at running the ball, and if Georgia is going to climb to the top of the college football world they have to run the ball better this year.
"I would say we are coming off a year that we were subpar at that (running the football), when we really tried to drive that home. We're not going to ever get away from that," Kirby Smart said via georgiadogs.com. "We have to be able to run the football. Show me a good team that wins championships that can't run the football. I mean, it just doesn't happen. You look at the national champions the last five, six years. They're effective at running the football and stopping the run. It's one of the leading statistics over the last 10 to 15 years in national championship teams."
Georgia fans' disgust for Mike Bobo's play calling might get even worse in 2026
One of the biggest complaints Georgia fans have with Bobo is that his play calling is too predictable. They think every set of new downs Georgia far too often will run the ball up the middle twice before trying to pass for a first down. Georgia fans want to see more exciting and unpredictable plays than that, but they might not get their wish this season thanks to Smart's demands.
Establishing the run is important for any effective offense. Having a solid run game wears an opposing defense out while also daring their defensive backs to inch forward to help stop the run which then opens up more windows in the passing game. Smart doesn't think Georgia was good enough in the run game last year, so he wants Bobo to focus on that even more this season.
Considering Georgia fans already thought Bobo ran the ball too much, they could be in for a rude awakening this season if Georgia does run the ball more.
Kirby Smart deserves the trust that some fans refuse to give Mike Bobo
Even if Georgia fans are unwilling to trust Bobo, they should be able to trust Smart with every decision he makes. He's won four conference championships and two national titles in his 10 years with the program, so what more does Smart need to do?
Georgia fans' biggest problem with Bobo is that he hasn't won a national championship in either of his tenures with the program. They think he has had plenty of opportunities to win one but has always fallen short, and that has led them to become extremely frustrated with his coaching style to the point where they want him fired.
A lot of fans think this season is Bobo's last chance to earn their trust, but Bobo doesn't need that. All he needs is trust from Smart, and he was given that when Smart extended his contract through the 2028 season this offseason.
In reality the data shows that Georgia's offense has been admirable under Bobo. Over the past five years Georgia's offense is No. 2 in the country in explosive plays and just last season they were No. 28 in the country with 32.1 points per game.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to score more points than that, but 32 points per game should be enough for fans to trust Bobo. Unfortunately he still has work to do to make some fans believe in him, but Smart's demands to run the ball more will likely not earn him more love from those fans who question him.
