Mike Bobo is entering his fourth year as Georgia's offensive coordinator since returning to the program. He had a long eight-year stint running Georgia's offense in the past, but this will only be his fifth season coaching under Kirby Smart with this year marking his fourth season running Georgia's offense.
Bobo however is yet to meet expectations. The SEC Championships and regular season wins are great, but fans want more than that. They expect playoff wins and national championships, and so far under Bobo they haven't gotten close.
Fans have begun to turn on him even if he has Smart's stamp of approval, so this may be his last chance to win them over before people completely give up on him.
Mike Bobo's last opportunity to win Georgia fans over comes with added pressure
Georgia is entering this season as the favorite to win the SEC. They also are one of the five most likely teams to win a national championship according to Vegas as well. All that means is that fans expect a deep playoff run, and if they fail due to poor offensive play then Bobo once again will receive all the blame.
Georgia unsurprisingly has a lot of talent all over the field this year. That is typically the case, but this year their offense has two big names to watch who were just named to the Maxwell Award Preseason Watchlist.
Gunner Stockton and Nate Frazier were both named to this preseason watchlist which is an award that goes to the nation's best player at the end of every season. This shows that if Bobo plays his cards right he could have one of the best duos in the country and in Georgia football history.
Bobo has to prove himself this season. He may already have Smart's trust but he can't afford to lose the fan base anymore than he already has. This is a make-or-break year for him, and anything short of playoff success will be a failure.
Kirby Smart isn't ready to give up on Mike Bobo just yet
Even though some fans may not believe Bobo, Smart absolutely does. That has never been more clear than after he signed Bobo to a contract extension this offseason which will keep him in Athens through the 2028 season.
Fans may be confused as to why Smart believes in him, but in reality there are some good reasons.
Winning the SEC matters, and in Bobo's three years in control of the offense they've won it two times. They also nearly won the conference in 2023 as well after a perfect 12-0 regular season.
On top of that, Georgia has the second-most explosive plays in the country over the past five years. Bobo is only responsible for three of those years, but this proves one of the biggest complaints from fans wrong when they claim his offense is ineffective and boring.
Bobo also is an elite recruiter with five-star quarterback commit Jayden Wade, who is the No. 2 overall player in the 2028 recruiting class, who is already committed to play at Georgia.
Smart's opinion on Bobo is the only one that actually matters, but Bobo is quickly running out of time to stay in the fan base's good graces. At the end of the day that may not matter to him, but all fans want is to have some playoff success again and that should be his ultimate goal this season too.
