If Georgia is going to find more success in the College Football Playoff this season it will be because their offense finds a way to be more effective. That pressure falls on the entire offense, but Gunner Stockton and Nate Frazier are two of the Bulldogs with the most responsibility.
As the starting quarterback and running back they will be expected to lead this team both on the field and as leaders off of it. If they fall short of their expectations then Georgia more than likely will fall short in the playoff for the third year in a row.
Thankfully there is a lot of hope that they will both be great this season, and that was proven when both players were named to the Maxwell Award Preseason Watchlist on Monday.
Gunner Stockton, Nate Frazier named to Maxwell Award Preseason Watchlist
The Maxwell Award goes to the nation's best college football player every season. Think of it as the Hesiman Trophy with a little less hoopla and no bias at all.
It will be extremely difficult for either Stockton or Frazier to win this award, but that is besides the point. The fact that both players were named to the preseason watchlist is significant enough because it shows how great they both can be this season.
Stockton was very good for Georgia last year, in fact he finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting. If he wants to finish higher in the Heisman voting and contend for the Maxwell Award this year though he will need to have a better season, but all accounts point to Stockton improving in every facet of his game so far this season.
Then there is Frazier who hasn't gotten the same public attention that Stockton has. He however has absolutely proven himself each of the last two years, and with this likely being his final season in Athens he has found himself as a dark horse Heisman contender as well.
Georgia has only had two Maxwell Award winners in their history (Charley Trippi in 1946 and Herschel Walker in 1982), but these two are Georgia's best chance to add a third winner this year. Even if they don't win though they have an opportunity to be one of the best offensive duos in Georgia football history, and that is good enough for everyone in Athens.
Mike Bobo has everything he needs to prove Georgia fans wrong
Stockton and Frazier won't be able to lead Georgia to a championship this season on their own. The rest of their teammates will have to pull their weight too, and so will offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
That is either a good or bad thing depending on if you're a Mike Bobo hater or defender, but Bobo has to prove himself this season after being unable to help Georgia win a national championship in his first three years back with the program.
The good news for Bobo is that he has plenty of talent in his offense which is headlined by Stockton and Frazier, so if he was going to win his first playoff game with Georgia it feels like this year is his best shot.
