A vast majority of Georgia football fans do not like Mike Bobo. He has never deserved the hate he receives, but for some reason certain fans just can't stop complaining about him every chance they get.
Kirby Smart has noticed this, and he's sick and tired of it. So when he spoke at SEC Media Days he took any chance he got to defend his offensive coordinator and even went as far as to essentially tell everyone to leave him alone and trust his judgement because he knows more about football than any fan does.
“I do think football intuition is one of my strengths, and knowing that, I know we got the right offensive coordinator,” Smart said via 247sports.com.
Kirby Smart has defended Mike Bobo every chance he gets
It's one thing for Smart to say he believes in Bobo and it's another thing for him to show it with his actions. The good news for the fans that believe in Bobo is that Smart proved with his actions earlier this month.
Earlier this offseason Smart extended Bobo's contract through the 2028 season. That means Georgia fans get to enjoy his presence on the Bulldogs' sideline for the next three years. This upset a lot of fans, but whether they like it or not he isn't going anywhere.
There's no denying that Bobo still has a lot to prove because his offense the last two years has sputtered in the playoff. But he has excelled in every other aspect as Georgia's offensive coordinator, so while that doesn't excuse his poor performance in the CFP it should give him more opportunities to prove himself.
Georgia fans unrealistic expectations have led them to hate Mike Bobo
Georgia fans were really spoiled at the start of the 2020s. This is when Todd Monken was the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator and when Georgia rattled off two National Championships behind Stetson Bennett and an explosive offense.
Then Bobo took over in 2023 and people love to act like the offense got worse. And while they may have taken a small step back statistically, they still won at an extremely high rate.
In 2023 Georgia went 12-0 before losing in the SEC Championship game to Alabama. They should've still made the playoff and were good enough to win a national title, but they were wrongly left out.
Then in 2024 and 2025 Georgia won the SEC in the most difficult years the SEC has ever seen. Not only is this when Texas and Oklahoma joined the conference, but this was the first two years that divisions no longer existed. That made getting to Atlanta more difficult to accomplish, but Georgia was still able to get it done.
Bobo has also been an elite recruiter since becoming offensive coordinator. Georgia has continued to sign some of the best classes in the country and they have added some big names on the offensive side of the ball. This includes multiple five-stars like wide receiver Talyn Taylor, offensive lineman Juan Gaston, tight end Kaiden Prothro, the No. 1 running back in the 2027 class Kemon Spell and the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 class Jayden Wade.
Without Bobo who knows if these players would've chosen Georgia.
Fans expected to win it all every season after winning back-to-back national titles. But no one should determine if a season was successful or not based on if Georgia wins a National Championship or not. Those expectations are impossible to live up to, and to prove that look no further than Nick Saban's tenure at Alabama. That was the most dominant run modern college football has ever seen and even they didn't win it all every year.
Bobo is the right man for the job. Smart thinks that and the results on the field mostly back that up. If Georgia continues to fail in the playoff over the remaining three years of his contract then it might be time to move on from him, but he has earned this contract extension and deserves to be loved by every single Georgia fan.
