Georgia football is off and running with the 2026 recruiting class, and Kirby Smart and his staff are after some elite players. One of those players just so happens to be the No. 1 running back in the country in Savion Hiter.
According to the 247Sports composite ranking, Hiter is the No. 17 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class. He also is the No. 1 running back as well as the top ranked player from his home state of Virginia.
Georgia’s recruitment of Hiter was off to a great start as he visited campus for Georgia’s big win over Tennessee this past season. Hiter then gave Georgia some great news by naming them one of his top four schools along with Michigan, Tennessee and Ohio State. And while this is great news for the Bulldogs, Hiter unfortunately publicly named Michigan as his top school just a few days after naming his top four.
However, that bad news isn’t stopping Georgia from their pursuit of Hiter as Georgia running back coach Josh Crawford recently made a visit with Hiter.
Nation’s No. 1 RB for 2026. Hiter holds the belt across the two major industry aggregate rankings metrics.

He’s the No. 2 RB for ESPN and Rivals. https://t.co/R60NhhjSqf
Georgia isn’t giving up with Hiter
Sure Georgia got bad news when Hiter named Michigan as his top school, but that did not end their pursuit of him. In all honesty, that likely only pushed UGA to recruit him even harder because that’s how badly Smart and his staff want Hiter. And that extra push to recruit Hiter was seen by this recent visit from Coach Crawford.
Hiter’s recruitment has a long ways to go still, and this summer will have a massive impact on who he eventually commits to. It’s likely that Hiter will officially visit all four schools previosuly mentioned, so Georgia will get another chance to wow him. And hopefully Georgia knocks any future visits out of the park, because they could really use a player of Hiter’s caliber.
