Georgia football clinched their spot in the SEC Championship game Friday night thanks to Texas A&M's loss to Texas. At the time they didn't know who their opponent in Atlanta would be, but it unsurprisingly turned out to be the Alabama Crimson Tide.
This will be the fifth time Georgia will face Alabama in the SEC Championship game, and unfortunately the Bulldogs have lost the previous four meetings. But that doesn't mean they will lose again this season.
However, even if Georgia does lose it isn't the worst thing in the world because win or lose Georgia will still make out pretty well after this game.
Georgia's win-win SEC Championship game scenario
Georgia will more than likely be the No. 3 team in the country entering the SEC Championship game next week. That is good enough to earn a first round bye in the College Football Playoff meaning they would only need to win three games to win a National Championship instead of four. However, if Georgia were to lose to Alabama there's a good chance they would drop outside of the top four and fail to earn a first round bye.
While that would mean they now need to win four games to win a national title, there would be a good consolation prize waiting for them. As long as they don't drop outside of the top eight then Georgia would get to host their first round playoff game in Sanford Stadium in Athens.
Obviously the hope is for Georgia to beat Alabama, repeat as SEC Champions and earn a first round bye in the playoff. It is however nice to know that even if Georgia does lose to Alabama they will still comfortably be in the playoff and likely get to host a playoff game for the first time.
