Misery loves company, we suppose... While neither Georgia or Alabama will be playing in this year's national championship, at least the Bulldogs did not have the worst day ever in the transfer portal. Although it is not the end of the world for the Crimson Tide, Kalen DeBoer's program got punched in the face with one transfer portal move, and then took another shot to the chin less than an hour later.
It all started with former Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman deciding to transfer to Texas on Sunday.

Not much later, former NC State running back Hollywood Smothers flipped from Alabama to Texas.

Even though both players have ended up at Texas, keep in mind that Georgia does not play the Longhorns in league play next year. With the SEC implementing a 3-6 schedule beginning in 2026, the Dawgs will get a depleted Alabama team in Tuscaloosa in its nine-game conference slate. The only way UGA plays Texas would be in either the SEC Championship or the College Football Playoff.
Alabama has time to rectify this, but year three may be especially critical for DeBoer at the helm of it.
Georgia smiles after seeing Alabama's latest transfer portal misfortunes
Although the SEC sent five of its teams to the College Football Playoff, a few of them will not be back next season. While it remains to be seen what transpires for Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, Alabama is far more likely to miss out on them next year than Georgia would. One could argue that Georgia is among the surest locks to make the 12-team field out of the SEC next season, with Texas.
Under his predecessor Nick Saban, the benchmark for success at Alabama was winning a national championship. Now under DeBoer, it may just be getting into the playoff and winning a postseason game. The game has shifted on all of us, leaving teams that used to be on top constantly like Alabama and Georgia left to figure out the new rules of play. For now, Georgia is light years ahead of the Tide...
Ultimately, Georgia has not had the best time in the transfer portal either. The Bulldogs have lost many players to the portal this winter. While they have made a few key pickups, Kirby Smart and his staff need to do a better job of closing down the stretch than DeBoer and his staff have over in Tuscaloosa. Both teams will land high-quality players in the coming days, but this was a tough blow...
While there have been many winners in the portal, Alabama was easily the biggest loser on Sunday.
