Georgia flips nation’s No. 1 JUCO Alius Mayo to add first CB in their 2027 class

It’s almost October and Georgia still didn’t have a true corner committed to their 2027 recruiting class. That hole was just filled on Tuesday when they flipped the No. 1 JUCO recruit in the country, Alius Mayo, from Cal.

Kirby Smart has had some elite recruiting years at the University of Georgia. Smart's ability to recruit some of the best players in the nation is what has helped Georgia dominate for nearly a decade now in the sport.

While Georgia consistently has plenty of coveted recruits on the sidelines during home games, last week's matchup against Oklahoma had a surprisingly loaded lineup of elite prospects. Since Georgia dominated Oklahoma 41-13, that list has already started to pay dividends for the Dawgs with a commitment from the top JUCO prospect in the country.

Top JUCO player flips to Georgia

The top JUCO player in the 2027 recruiting cycle Alius Mayo announced his commitment to Georgia on Tuesday, just three days after his official visit in Athens during the Oklahoma game. Mayo was previously committed to the Cal Golden Bears.

Mayo has a tall 6'4" frame with elite speed that make him a great physical threat for the tough Georgia defense Kirby Smart routinely has. Mayo's tape showcases his ability to close in and trigger on the run or make sure tackles in the flats.

Smart has had some elite recruits come through his program, but not many being JUCO. However, that does not mean the list does not include some notable names. Georgia legend Stetson Bennett as well as Devonte Wyatt, Jermaine Johnson, and Javon Wims are among some names Smart has recruited from the JUCO level that have gone on to have excellent careers in Athens.

Key Oklahoma win is already paying dividends

Many critics have voiced how Georgia "has yet to play anybody" this season, but that does not seem to matter to the ones that it concerns the most. The atmosphere in the stadium during SEC play and a stripe out made for an elite recruiting visit for those invited. This game was the first time Oklahoma played Georgia since the historic Rose Bowl in 2018, and the atmosphere matched that level of anticipation.

An SEC game is still an SEC game, and Oklahoma was ranked as a top 10 team in preseason rankings. The Sooners still have an elite defense despite what the rankings show. Even facing an elite defense, the offense for Georgia scored 34 points.

John Mateer was also a Heisman trophy candidate at one point in the 2025 season before his hand injury, and Georgia completely stifled their attack. You can say Georgia has not played anyone ranked, but you cannot say that they have not played games that had a high impact on the program. With the help of their win on Saturday, they can now say that they have flipped the best JUCO prospect in the nation and finally found their first corner commit in the 2027 recruiting class.
