Georgia football gets a large payday from Ole Miss after Saturday's loss
There is no such thing as a consolation prize after getting blown out by Ole Miss, but the SEC handed a punishment the Rebels way that is quite convenient for Georgia football.
For years the SEC has fined programs whenever fans rush the field. The rule itself is strange because rushing the field is one of the most exciting things to watch and take part in after a big win, but in an effort to improve player safety it makes sense.
In 2023, the SEC changed their rules so the fine placed on any program for this reason will be paid to their opponent. So Georgia has a nice chunk of change heading their way after their loss to Ole Miss.
Ole Miss has to pay Georgia a large sum of money
According to SEC rules, teams whose fans rush the field after the game have to pay a $250,000 fine to their opponent. However, in the Rebels' case, they actually owe Geogia $350,000.
This is because they are subject to an additional $100,000 fine because their fans rushed the field before the game was over.
Now the obvious thing that needs to be stated is that Georgia fans would much rather have won the game than get this money from Ole Miss. The most important thing will always be to win the games on the field rather than getting a quick buck from a team when in reality $350,000 isn't that much money.
But at the end of the day, it is kind of funny that Ole Miss has to pay Georgia all of this money. Maybe it would make more sense to have this money donated to a good cause because Kirby Smart and Georgia didn't do anything to earn it. But if the SEC says to send this money to Athens, then why should they say no?
