Georgia Football is No. 1 once again, just not in the way they were hoping

Carson Beck has received his fair share of negative press so far this season. And a lot of it is probably deserved.

He has noticeably regressed this season for Georgia football compared to last year and is also turning the ball over at an alarming rate. Georgia is also struggling to put points on the board, as seen in their loss to Ole Miss as they only managed 10 points.

But Beck isn't the only reason for the struggles on offense. In fact, the Bulldogs lead the nation in a stat that nobody ever wants to lead the nation in.

Georgia football No. 1 in drops this season

In a stat that likely isn't surprising to any Georgia fan, the Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the country in drops. And unfortunately for Georgia, that stat was broadcast to the entire country during their loss to Ole Miss.

So while Beck has not been good enough so far this season, a lot of the blame for UGA's issues on offense needs to get put on their receivers as well.

Nobody is expecting Georgia to have zero drops, but the stat referenced during the Ole Miss game shared that Georgia was up to 27 drops so far this season. That is so far beyond unacceptable that there isn't a good enough word to discribe how bad that is.

But think for a second how much better the offense would be, and how much better Beck's season statistically would be, if the team's total drops were cut in half. Not only would that improve Beck's stats individually, but Georgia would have scored a lot more points so far this season.

Think about it for a second. Most of Georgia's drops this season have come on plays that would have picked up first downs had the receiver caught the ball. That means the drive would have extended at least another set of downs, which in the long run would cause UGA to find the endzone more often.

Would this have resulted in a win over Ole Miss or Alabama? Probably not. But they would have stood a much better chance at winning both games had these drops not occurred.

If Kirby Smart's offense is going to improve, it's going to take a lot of effort from everyone on that side of the ball. But one of the most important things that has to improve are the drops, especially when Beck puts the ball right on the money.
