So far this offseason, Georgia football has added a lot of great players to their program from the transfer portal. This includes two starters at wide receiver as well as some solid talent in the secondary as well.
Now that the calendar is about to turn to February, transfer portal talk will die down for a little bit until after spring practice. However, there was one more transfer Georgia was targeting, and that is Ohio State defensive lineman Hero Kanu.
Kanu has played the last two seasons with Ohio State where he combined for 14 tackles and one sack. These stats may not be the greatest, but Kanu has a lot of talent as he was a four-star prospect out of high school. Georgia and Kirby Smart hosted Kanu on a visit to Athens on Tuesday and the assumption was that he would announce his commitment decision soon after.
And that’s exactly what he did Wednesday morning.
Kanu is heading to Texas
According to Hayes Fawcett with On3, Kanu officially announced his commitment to Texas on Wednesday morning.
While it is unfortunate to lose any recruiting battle, especially to an SEC program that Georgia will be competing directly against in the years to come, this loss really isn’t all that bad. For starters, Kanu has not proven himself at the collegiate level yet. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad player or doesn’t have a lot of potential, but it is unlikely that he will make a huge impact in his first season at his new school.
Georgia also has plenty of time to add more transfers to the program as well if Smart and his staff feel the need to. That likely won’t happen anytime soon now, but once spring practice is complete later this year Georgia will then become active in the transfer portal once again.
So while it would have been nice to win this recruitment, this loss is not a reason to panic. Georgia will be able to add a defensive lineman transfer later this year if they still want to, and if not, Georgia has proven they know how to develop talent at this position extremely well, so the Bulldogs likely already have many elite players up front on their team already.
