Georgia football has been very active so far in the transfer portal. Kirby Smart and his staff are working on bringing multiple players in for visits over the next few weeks, with most of the attention being put on wide receivers.
However, on Thursday word came out that Georgia has begun their pursuit of a transfer QB and are one of four contenders for him, which may be a surprise to some.
Cal QB Fernando Mendoza
Georgia football is reportedly pursuing Cal transfer QB Fernando Mendoza. The fact that Georgia is going after a QB in the portal in general is a little surprising, simply because of all the talent Georgia already has at the position.
Everyone knows Gunner Stockton, who is gearing up to make his mark on the College Football Playoff this season. On top of that, Georgia has a top 50 QB from the 2023 class in Jaden Rashada as well as true freshman Ryan Puglisi. UGA also has two talented QBs coming to Athens from the 2025 recruiting class, headlined by top 150 player Ryan Montgomery.
So Georgia appears to have plenty of talent at the position next year with Carson Beck likely heading to the NFL, but that isn't stopping Smart from targeting a portal QB.
Mendoza has spent his first two seasons at Cal before announcing of his intentions to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday. He is coming off an excellent 2024 season where he completed nearly 69 percent of his passes for 3,004 yards, 16 touchdowns and only six interceptions. On top of that, he is a capable runner as well as he added 105 yards on the ground and two more touchdows.
Indiana, UCLA and Wisconsin are also contenders for Mendoza as well.
A visit has not yet been publicly announced, but all signs point towards that happening in the near future. So it will be interesting to see how aggressively Smart and his staff push for Mendoza, because if they go all out for him one would think they would have a great chance at beating the other three programs in contention.
