Georgia football's dynasty is on the line against Texas
The Georgia football dynasty is on the line this weekend against Texas. As fans of UGA, it at times may not feel like the Bulldogs are in the midst of a dynasty. But when looking at things closely it’s clear that they are.
The day and age of Alabama dominating the college football world is over. Even though Georgia still struggles to beat the Tide, the Bulldogs are currently the “who’s who” of college football.
Georgia has won two of the last three national championships, and while Michigan may be the defending champ, they have not yet come close to overtaking Georgia as the top dogs. But continuing to be the top dog in college football, the Georgia football dynasty, and the Bulldogs realistic hopes of winning another national championship are all on the line this weekend.
A loss would end Georgia football’s run
In theory, a loss against Texas doesn’t completely ruin Georgia’s season. But let’s be honest, a two-loss regular season doesn't really scream "Georgia is a dynasty." Also in this theoretical world there is still a good chance UGA makes the College Football Playoffs even after a loss to Texas.
But even if UGA did make it in, would we be even remotely confident that they win it all? I think UGA could win a game or two, but no, I don't think they would win it all.
What needs to happen for Georgia's dynasty to stay alive?
1. Michigan can't repeat as champion
The first thing that must happen is Michigan not winning the national title again this season. A new team winning a national championship two straight seasons would dethrone Georgia as top dogs immediately. Thankfully the Wolverines already have two losses, one more and they are out of CFP contention.
2. Win the SEC championship
The second thing that could happen to keep Georgia's dynasty alive is that Georgia needs to win the SEC Championship. In order to get to this title game, Texas is probably a must win. Again, they would not be eliminated completely with a loss, but two conference losses would be tough to overcome just to make it to Atlanta.
3. Get close to winning a national championship
But then we have the national championship which we already discussed. Georgia would need to go undefeated the rest of the season (if they lose to Texas) just to make it into the CFP. And like we already discussed, a loss against Texas would make me feel like a national championship is impossible to attain.
But there is still a scenario where I think Georgia's dynasty continues even after a loss to Texas. If Georgia makes a run to the national championship game, which would mean winning three playoff games, I think their dynasty would continue even if they don't win the title game. Anything short of that and it would be hard to convince anyone outside of Athens that Georgia is still a dynasty.
So what is the easiest way for Georgia's dynasty to continue? Beat Texas. A win against the Longhorns would likely propel Georgia up to No. 2 in the country. They also would probably become the favorite to win a national championship as well.
So all of these other scenarios are great, but let's just beat Texas so there is no debate if the Georgia dynasty rolls on or not.
