For the past half decade or so, Georgia football has entered every season with sky-high expectations. Those expectations always center around Georgia winning the SEC, winning a National Championship and maybe even going undefeated. Georgia fans may still have these expectations for UGA next season, but the rest of the country is expecting Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs to take a step back.
ESPN has indicated that they have lowered their expectations for Georgia as they have the Bulldogs lower in their Way-Too-Early rankings than Georgia has been in a few years. But Vegas also is not as high on the Bulldogs this season as they typically are as UGA is currently not the favorite to win the SEC.
Vegas has Georgia falling behind in the SEC title odds
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Bulldogs have the second best odds at +390 to win the SEC next season. On the surface, having the second best odds to win the conference may seem pretty fair, especially when you consider that Texas is the favorite. But the Longhorns' odds are currently set at +210 which is significantly better than the Bulldogs.
Most Georgia fans would probably admit that Texas is more likely to win the SEC next season than Georgia, but the margin between these teams should not be as large as Vegas is indicating. Does Vegas forget that Georgia came from behind in last year's SEC Championship game with a backup quarterback to beat Texas? Do they remember that Georgia also beat Texas twice last season?
As mentioned, the Longhorns should have better odds to win the SEC, but that has more to do with their schedule than them being that much better of a team than Georgia. Every SEC team will have the same conference schedule as last season, just at the opposite venues from where they played in 2024. For Georgia that means they will once again face arguably the most difficult schedule in the conference while Texas will face one of the easiest.
In order to win the SEC you obviously need to make it to the title game first, and the Longhorns path to the title game is much easier than Georgias. In all honesty, it would be shocking if Texas didn't make the championship game again next season while UGA maybe not so much. So that might explain where FanDuel got these odds.
Is Georgia capable of winning the SEC? Absolutely. And at the end of the day that is all that matters as they will once again have a chance to prove themsleves, which includes a home game against Texas on Nov. 15.
