In case you missed the news, Georgia football missed out on the No. 10 overall player in the transfer portal when Kentucky transfer wide receiver Dane Key announced his commitment to Nebraska. Key was predicted by On3 and 247Sports to end up at Georgia, so this loss took a lot of Georgia fans by surprise.

And while everyone’s first instinct was to panic about the state of the wide receiver room, especially after this past season, maybe this loss wasn’t as bad as people first thought.

Georgia’s wide receiver room can be a strength next year

There are a few reasons why Georgia’s wide receiver room will be just fine next year. For starters, Georgia’s 2025 recruiting class has two elite wide receivers that will be joining UGA this offseason. This includes five-star Talyn Taylor and four-star CJ Wiley. It’s hard to ever rely on freshmen to make a big impact on the field in their first season, but both players have the ability to do just that.

On top of that, Georgia also could be getting Colbie Young back next fall. Obviously he needs to get through his legal case first, but a separate court ruling just ruled that seasons played at the JUCO level will no longer count against a players four years of eligibility. So that opens the path for Young to return next fall if he chooses.

Finally, Georgia is still after an elite receiver in the portal who is ranked higher than Key. That player is USC transfer Zachariah Branch, who is considered one of the most electric players in all of college football. Branch and his brother recently visited Georgia as well as Arizona State, and while a prediction hasn’t been made in this recruitment yet, Georgia has to like where they stand right now.

Sure it would have been nice to land Key out of the portal, nobody is denying that, but it may not be the end of the world like some people initially thought. And if UGA does get Young back next year and adds Branch, then their wide receiver room will be one of the best in the country in 2025.
