Now that Georgia football has officially entered postseason play, one thing everyone can expect is a lot of transfer portal news. This includes players who are looking at Georgia as their potential new team as well as current Bulldogs deciding to leave the program.
Georgia has already had one player enter the portal last week, and a senior wide receiver has just been added to that list as the second portal entrant for Georgia this year.
Georgia WR Michael Jackson enters the transfer portal
Senior wide receiver Michael Jackson has made the somewhat surprising decision to enter the transfer portal on Saturday night. The reason this is shocking is because it came just hours after Georgia’s win over Texas in the SEC Championship game. Georgia also still has a chance to win a National Championship in the College Football Playoff, so leaving before seeing the rest of the season out may seem like strange timing.
However, it really isn’t all that strange in Jackson’s case.
This season is Jackson’s first with UGA after he spent three years with USC. And while he hoped to make a big impact on the team, that unfortunately never ended up happening as he only recorded one catch for 10 yards this season. So it’s clear that he likely wasn’t going to play in any future CFP game, so moving on right now is probably the wise choice for Jackson.
The portal officially opens on Dec. 9, which means teams can start recruiting players that enter the portal at that time. So entering the portal right now gives Jackson more opportunities from schools that may not be there had he waited until January when Georgia’s season ends.
So while it’s unfortunate to see any player leave, this departure really doesn’t impact Kirby Smart and Georgia all that much. But hopefully Jackson is able to find a nice landing spot so he can have one more good year in college.
