Georgia Football: Series history vs. Georgia Tech
The day is finally here. Georgia football's annual season finale against in-state rival Georgia Tech is officially upon us.
This game is always one of the biggest of the season as bragging rights in the state of Georgia are on the line for the next 365 days. And Georgia has no plans on giving up those bragging rights this year.
In fact, the Bulldogs have had the bragging rights in the state for a vast majority of the years these programs have been playing football. So let's take a quick look at that series history before the game gets here.
Georgia football dominates Georgia Tech all time
Georgia holds a substanial lead over the Yellow Jackets all time, with a current record of 71-39-5. That's right, Georgia is just seven wins away from having Georgia Tech doubled in the all time series history.
Seven wins may seem like a lot, but looking at recent history it may not be as difficult to achieve as one might think.
Georgia is currently on a six game win streak in this series, with their last loss coming in 2016 by one point. But going back a little further, the Bulldogs have actually won 19 of the last 22 meetings against Georgia Tech. This stretch includes a separate seven game win streak from 2001-2007, which shows that it is definitely possible for UGA to win the next seven games to officially double Georgia Tech in their all time series.
Winning this game is important for so many reasons. The Bulldogs have their eyes set on a College Football Playoff appearance, which will become a lot more difficult to achieve if they lose this game. But on top of that, Georgia is also chasing a recored currently held by Georgia Tech in this matchup's history.
The Yellow Jackets currently hold the longest win streak in this series with eight wins in a row from 1949-1956. So Georgia needs to win three more games to surpass this record, which may not seem that important, but it would be a fun thing to have over Georgia Tech.
The Bulldogs may be massive favorites against Georgia Tech in this game, but that does not mean this will be an easy win. Any team can win whenever these two teams play, no matter how good or bad each team is that year, so Kirby Smart is going to have to have his team ready for a battle if they are going to win this game.
