Georgia football will tie an SEC record if they beat Georgia Tech
Georgia football's game against Georgia Tech is massive for so many reasons. A win would potentially clinch their spot in the College Football Playoff while also keeping momentum on the Bulldogs' side as they move on to the SEC Championship game next weekend.
On top of that, a win today would mark Georgia's seventh straight win over the Yellow Jackets, which is one shy of Georgia Tech's record when they won eight straight games from 1949-1956.
But there is one other major record that Georgia would tie if they beat the Yellow Jackets on Friday night.
Most consecutive wins in SEC history
As it stands right now, Georgia has won a whopping 30 games in a row at home. This is tied with Florida for the second longest home win streak in SEC history and one game behind Alabama who won 31 in a row from 2015-2019. So beating Georgia Tech will tie this record, and put the Bulldogs one win away from holding this record on their own.
There is even a chance Georgia could set this record later this season. If Georgia wins the SEC Championship game next weekend they will automatically earn a top four seed and first round bye in the CFP. But if they were to lose next weekend, then there is a chance Georgia could host a first round playoff game at Sanford Stadium. Now that would be a nice consolation prize for losing the SEC Championship game.
But if Georgia doesn't get a chance to set this record this year, they will get it easily next sesaon. Their season opener next year is at home against Marshall, which in theory should be a very easy win for Kirby Smart and Georgia. So knowing that, it would be wise for Georgia to beat Tech, win the SEC Championship game then focus on breaking this record at the start of next season.
